BIO 104L 4/8/96
Evolution and Diversity in Plants
Pages 5-34
Introduction to Biology 104 Lab
Pages 5-7
This section lists the requirements for Bio 104 Lab. Included are
attendance policies, lab supply card requirements, preparation for
the lab, grading, and safety regulations. All of these can be
accessed by clicking on Bio 104L on the Biology Almanac on the
BioSciences Webpage.
Use of the Compound Microscope
This section discusses the compound microscope. It is the same
preparation as used in Bio 103. If any questions arise regard the
laboratory manual.
1. Introduction to the laboratory.
A. Quiz this week (18 pts)
-read lab ahead of time: pages 17-34
-Quiz consists of:
-material from lab lecture
-procedures and introduction in lab book
-general information covered on lab during class lecture
-safety procedures
-microscope
-information gathered while doing the lab
Lab Lecture Questions
1) Name on reason (given in lecture) it is important to
understand/learn about plants.
2) Describe (generally) the two parts of alternation of
generations in plants.
3) Define adaptation.
4) What was the function of the hammer in the orchid
viewed in Sexual Encounters of the Floral Kind?
5) A sporophyte (diploid) creates haploid spores-What
type of division is this?
Answers
1) Huge diversity, human uses; spices, medicines, foods,
decoration, ecology and environment
2) 2 parts of alternation of generations: sexual and
asexual reproduction.
1n=1n 2n=1n
3) Characteristic that increases the survival and
reproduction in an organism.
4) Decoy for wasps pollinator
-attracts wasp to pollinate plant
-mimics female wasp
5) meiosis
2. This Week in Lab
A. Safety and parts of sporic meiosis
B. Evolution
1. Alternation of generations
-what is accomplished
-name the structures
-it is asexual and sexual reproduction
SEE FIGURE 25.15
3. In Lab
-Identify what stage you are looking at
-What structures/adaptations are there for each plant at any
particular stage.
-Adaptations: aid in survival and reproduction of the organism.
Note: Look at the environment and reproductive method.
-Know which stages go through mitosis and meiosis
-Algae
Mosses: sporophyte and spore capsules, male and female gametophytes, and protonema
Flowering plants: Angiosperm, pollen, monocot, and dicot
-Pollen germination:
-pollen tube delivers sperm to egg.
Note: Know the purpose of this.
Film: Sexual Encounters of the Floral Kind
This film showed how various plants reproduce. For example,
the film showed how the bucket orchid uses orchid bees to fertilize
other orchids.
This film is available in the BioScience Learning Center.
